    Earth Art Recycling Project - students researched Earth Art Recycling Project - students researched an environmental issue and then created a work of art to convey a message. This student used recycled cd’s and cardboard. Artist Statement _”Under The Sea Recycled materials Earth day is a time to celebrate and give back to the Earth. In this assignment I was tasked with displaying some form of pollution in an ecosystem that I am passionate about changing for the better. I have always loved the ocean. My family and I often go fishing off the coast of Texas over the vacations and each time we have gone back I have seen more and more plastic pollution in the ocean. For this project I used CDs, cardboard, scissors, plastic caps, paint markers, an X-acto knife and glue to make the fish. I made the fish out of recycled materials to help raise awareness about plastic pollution in the oceans. “ #recycledart #plasticpollution #upcycle #usedcds

Well, it isn’t. I lied. Why did I choose to research plastic pollution? The answer to that is very simple, it’s because it is something that is drastically affecting the environment also this topic is very flexible in art. You are able to portray this issue in many different media. The rise of plastics made from fossil fuels started from the dawn of time over a century ago. Plastic bottles are made from polyethylene terephthalate which uses a sheer amount of fossil fuels to not only produce the bottle but also the transportation use. Millions of plastic bottles are bought globally every second. 90% of the water in a bottled water bottle comes from making the bottle itself. Enough plastic is thrown around the earth to circle the earth 4 times. My artwork is a character from an anime, that I made into a girl variant along with a dabble of my fashion taste. This character is connected to “the infinity” therefore there are many hints that portray “infinity” such as the infinity sign choker, to the tiny details like the word “Mugen” on the belt buckle, along with the word “無限” which means infinite in both Japanese and Chinese. Likewise, the splatter paint design is drawn with a water pen and the fine liner is to portray the infinite sea. The reasoning behind many of these minuscule minutiae is because I wanted to demonstrate plastic pollution, not through the main design of my piece, but these infinitesimal messages. From the coupon in the mouth showing the word “free” and to the side a water bottle, to the purple background which depicts the plastic ridden polluted seas. What I mean by “infinity” in this piece is that there are innumerable amounts of plastic in the sea. Also along with the writing “ ステップバイステップ” that the character is speaking which means step by step in Japanese, which demonstrates what I am trying to commute that would be we can only proceed by taking one step at a time.” #middleschoolart #earthart #plasticpollution
